Cosmic rays and the interstellar medium

Summary:

Cosmic rays (CRs), from the astrophysical sites where they are produced to the Earth where we detect them, interact with radiation, matter and magnetic fields. Through these interactions, CRs have a dynamical impact on the interstellar medium (ISM), from the small scales associated of star formation to large giant molecular clouds. 

The current and forthcoming instruments, providing data of ever increasing quality at all wavelength, from the radio to the high-energy gamma-ray domain, mark a timely moment for the communities gathering experts of ‘interstellar medium’ and experts of ‘high-energy astroparticles’ to work together, in order to answer fundamental questions of CR physics: What are the sources of CRs? How do the different astrophysical accelerators  contribute to the CR spectrum ? How do CRs impact the chemistry of the ISM (especially ionization)? How do CRs interact with the turbulence of the ISM? 
With this workshop, we propose to continue a dialogue initiated a few years ago, that is essential to make the most of the data from large size observatories and advancing theoretical results from the two communities. 
 
We propose to articulate the workshop around the following themes: 
- Galactic sources of CRs : protostars, superbubbles and supernova remnants
- the propagation and dynamical effect of CRs in the turbulent and magnetized ISM
- CRs and the physico-chemical processes in the ISM
